SIRF and Openwave Collaborate to Bring Location to Mobile Widgets
SiRFstudio Location APIs to be Integrated with Openwave's Mobile AJAX Platform.
SiRF Technology has announced a strategic relationship with Openwave Systems to bring the power of location to Web 2.0 mobile applications. The two companies will work together to integrate SiRF's SiRFstudio location capabilities with Openwave MIDAS, a Mobile AJAX-based application development platform, enabling wireless operators, content publishers, and software developers to easily employ the context of location when creating mobile widgets, rich data services and online idle screen user interfaces on mobile devices. SiRF Technology and Openwave plan to jointly market the combined solution globally to wireless operators and mobile handset and device OEMs, enabling them to create the next-generation of innovative location-based mobile widgets and services for consumer and enterprise market segments.

"A key part of creating mobile services with a highly targeted and personalized experience is knowing where subscribers are, and the integration of the SiRFstudio APIs with MIDAS is designed to bring high-accuracy location technology within the reach of content publishers and developers," said Nara Rajagopalan, vice president of products, Openwave. "When combined with other existing content feeds and services in addition to other applications, location adds the geographic dimension and filtering needed to create compelling and highly relevant mobile data services that can drive Web content consumption on mobile devices."

Openwave's location-enabled MIDAS application development platform is designed to offer an easy, uniform way for content publishers and developers to access a variety of powerful location functionality, from location determination to mapping and routing, allowing developers to reduce their time to market and operators to more quickly deliver to consumers a wider choice of LBS applications that are easy to get, easy to use and deliver a rich, location experience. The Openwave MIDAS application development environment also includes tools to create idle-screen widgets and a framework for widget discovery, delivery, and lifecycle management. Openwave MIDAS is designed to run on Windows Mobile, Symbian, BREW, QTopia, Linux and any feature phone platform.

"Adding SiRFstudio to Openwave's MIDAS application development environment will speed development of location-aware widgets and other applications thus enhancing an operator's ability to capture significant revenue from 'long tail' niche mobile applications," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of marketing for SiRF. "The broad adoption of SiRFstudio APIs is part of SiRF's goal to bring the context of location to all aspects of the mobile experience, and our work with Openwave is another step towards achieving that goal."

SiRFstudio provides handset manufacturers and carriers with the location "platforming" and integration capabilities they need to deliver an out-of-the-box locative experience for mobile devices. It also provides a rapid LBS application development platform for software developers to embed sophisticated location capabilities into new and existing applications or services.
SiRFstudio is part of the SiRFecosystem, a comprehensive suite of tools and resources to speed development, testing and marketing of LBS applications that drive application diversification and provide a compelling locative experience for users. More than 100 companies are already participating in the SiRFecosystem LBS developer community, creating unique LocativeMediaTM applications and services.
